Class Description: 


This workshop is open to amateur and professional photographers with a working understanding of their camera settings and a basic knowledge of how to edit photos in Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.


This is a 5-day workshop and will include an ‘Introduction to Capturing the Night Sky’, three nights of shooting under the stars, and two days of post processing tutorials. We will concentrate on capturing the Milky Way, creating star trails, light painting, panoramas, depth-of-field blending, composites, aurora borealis (if visible), time-lapse photography and create time-lapsed videos. You will receive a comprehensive, 70 page booklet with step-by-step instructions about all phases of photographing and post processing for personal reference. You will leave this course with a deep understanding of the night sky and a thorough combination of skills, tools, and resources to move forward with your abilities. With over 80 topics you will:


  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the night sky (Earth’s orbit location of the Milky Way, meteor showers, moon cycles, aurora borealis, etc.)

  • Appreciate the importance of planning for your shoot

  • Understand the differences between shutter speed/aperture/ISO/white balance and more

  • Learn how to focus your lens at night

  • Begin to master the art of capturing the Milky Way, create star trails, panoramas, and time-lapse photography

  • Learn about light painting still images and time-lapse sequences

  • Understand noise reduction (how and when to use it)

  • Receive personal tips and special techniques

  • Learn how to create time-lapse videos similar to Illusion of Lights: A Journey into the Unseen.

  • Gain new skills with advanced post processing methods in Adobe Bridge, Photoshop, and After Effects
