Class Description:

This 5-Day workshop will explore the idea based on the traditional Japanese practice of using “boro” of tattered and mended rags to transform textile. The emphasis is not only to "make something," but to “have a dialog” with materials and processes you choose to work with.  Yoshiko will be available to guide you through this transformative process.

Indigo dyeing with sustainable methods will be included in the class, but will not be the main focus. Students should prepare to experiment and expand their own visual vocabulary while strengthening their personal creative process.  Participants are asked to bring small fabric or other dye-able materials in different types, texture, pattern to see a wide range of blues. Yoshiko encourages you to bring works in progress for critique and possibly to continue working on during the session.

The focus of the class is your journey to make marks on cloth or any tactile items that are likely to record their own history of use and interaction with the outside world including ‘wear & tear, fading, embellishment, and mending.

A sustainable indigo vat with organic reducing agent will be taught. Students will familiarize themselves with making of the vat, dyeing with it efficiently, and maintaining it for long periods. All natural fibers can be dyed.
