Susan Lapham
Genre: Quilting
Susan Lapham
Lapham is an abstract textile artist who dances between the design wall and sewing machine. She is inspired by her unusual childhood crossing five continents, learning three languages, and managing four brothers. She taught herself to sew by making a gingham dress for herself at age 9. She went on to make a trip around the world quilt for each of her brothers during high school. Her vibrant, geometric, and exquisitely colored work has been exhibited widely in museums and exhibits such as the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, The Dairy Barn, Schweinfurth Museum, Visions and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her quilts are in private collections as well as the International Quilt Museum and she has received awards for piecing from QuiltCon and Quilts=Art=Quilts. She occasionally lectures on her improvisational approach to quiltmaking and is a mentor to modern quilters seeking to improv their practice and exhibit their work. She received degrees in cartography and statistics and worked as a mapmaker and researcher until her retirement in 2023. She spends her creative time in her studio in Vienna, Virginia.
