Get outdoors and paint the unlimited beauty of Madeline Island!

This 5 day workshop will focus on how to approach the unique aspects of outdoor landscape painting while also incorporating more depth, expression, and atmosphere into your work. Thinking outside the obvious methods, students will be encouraged to explore options and alternatives to their normal routines. Through specific daily areas of study, we will cover topics to include:

• Choosing subject matter
• Simplifying and abstracting complex elements of the landscape
• Capturing the subject quickly and accurately
• Creating strong compositions
• Value/ color theory and atmospheric perspective.
• Strategies for agility and mobility while plein air painting

Working with a limited choice of colors will be emphasized.  Doing this also allows you to gain mastery over your understanding of paint mixing before adding extra pigments to your palette. Throughout the workshop, there will be daily instructor demonstrations in either oil, gouache or acrylic, periodic group critiques and robust individual personal instruction. Students may use whatever medium they like if you are comfortable with how to use it.
