About This Workshop
Unleash your inner artist and make a textile work that no one else could make, as you develop a personal design with your own sense of time and place. Emphasis will be on COLOR and VALUE, LINE, SHAPE and TEXTURE to express your own journey to where you are now in your life. Choose a personal symbol, motif and color to represent your sense of space, time and mood and build a stunning composition using a visual path, and pattern repeat without predictability. Learn to edit, select and simplify to create mystery, drama, richness, surprise and security in your work.
Whatever you choose to depict, I will provide guidance as you create a successful contemporary visual composition that says “This is me here and now!”
Supply list
The good part about working from home is that you have all your supplies around you! Use what pleases you as you choose to work by hand and / or machine. Choose your supplies accordingly.
Normal sewing supplies for hand and / or machine work
Sharp rotary cutter and cutting mat
Sharp scissors for fabric, thread, and paper.
Machine threads of your choice to match and contrast with your fabrics.
For hand work: a variety of needles and threads (embroidery, ordinary sewing threads, and any others you can stitch with or on by hand))
Fabric marking pens/ chalks of your choice
Note book, pens and pencils of your choice.
A variety of images and possible ideas from which to start your design. These may be photographs, drawings, magazine pictures, cards, or images on your tablet……whatever you would like to have around you to stir your creative juices and get you going. However remember you do NOT have to know exactly what you are going to do in the class!
Optional: hand work needles, threads, beads, buttons
Iron-on fusible i.e. Wonder Under, stabilizer, batting (about 1m)
Fabrics
Choose a colour palette with a selection of fabrics in your chosen range. Include fabrics to contrast with those, such neutrals and complementary colours, in solids, hand dyes, prints, stripes or plaids. Your fabrics should be mainly cottons, but you may wish to include contrast textures such as silks, velvets or linens etc.
The more variety, the greater your design possibilities.
Preparation
Spend time thinking about where you are in your life right now and what you would like to capture in fabric. You may want to decide on a motif that symbolizes you or moments in your life. Find photographs or images that you feel represent you. We will use these as a jumping off point to make individual designs without trying to reproduce them realistically.
